The following “DZ” programs were designed for a wide range of students interested in obtaining their “DZ” diploma licence.
“DZ” vehicles such as dump trucks, gravel and garbage trucks can be difficult for an improperly trained driver to operate safely. These vehicles are awkward, make wide turns and brake a lot slower than a regular vehicle.
Students taking the “DZ” programs at Rodgers are taught the correct way to operate these vehicles. A pre-trip inspection is practiced daily and students are taught to trouble shoot their own vehicle. Driving techniques include backing around corners and into docking bays and the trainee is taught extensive use of mirrors.
With the exception of varying driving techniques, both the “DZ” and “AZ” programs consist of the following courses:
Defensive Driving
Drug & Alcohol Training Awareness
Air Brake Z Endorsement
Axle Weights
Pre-trip Inspection
Coupling/Uncoupling
Backing and maneuvering on the road
Log Book Maintenance
Transportation of Dangerous Goods
Load Security
C.V.O.R. Compliance & Maintenance
Hazard Perception
Border Crossing Trip Planning & Map Reading
At the end of the program and upon
passing the Ministry of Transportation Road Test,(Drive
Test) students will be issued a diploma and will be eligible
to drive any vehicle allowed under Ministry regulations
with a “DZ” licence.

An interesting unknown statistic is that of all the accidents in which a commercial vehicle is involved, only 12% are the commercial vehicles fault. However, even though the non-commercial vehicle was at fault, could you have avoided the accident?
Collisions still affect your insurance regardless of who’s at fault, and people are still going to see your company’s truck jackknifed on the roadside or in the ditch. Frankly, does it matter who’s at fault? Public opinion of commercial drivers is low enough as it is, why make it worse through poor driving habits.
One of the common ailments amongst commercial drivers is that most motorists don’t know how to drive in the vicinity of trucks. You can’t teach other drivers to drive around your truck, but we can teach you to drive around other drivers.
The Defensive Driving Course teaches the fundamentals of defensive driving. Current techniques in foreseeing hazardous events, dealing with aggressive drivers, driving in hazardous conditions and how to act in case of an emergency are just a few of the multitude of topics covered in this comprehensive course.
This course will teach you the basic requirements for transporting hazardous materials and dangerous goods.
You will examine the history of why this act was implemented, loading procedures, placarding, cargo documentation, shipper’s responsibilities, carriers (drivers) responsibilities, emergency procedures and much more.
Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration Safety and Maintenance (4 hours)
